As a pioneer in the manufacture of offshore wind foundations, it is natural for us to be at the forefront of sustainability in our industry.

EEW Group Climate Strategy

2024

  • We produce verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for all production sites, showing quantified environmental information from independently verified data sources. 

  • We publish relevant greenhouse gas and Global Warming Potential (GWP) information in a Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) Report for the entire EEW Group worldwide.

2025

  • We only choose carbon neutral energy suppliers in Europe and the USA (Scope 2).

2030

  • We reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated within the company (Scope 1) and by our energy suppliers (Scope 2) by 50% (based on 2021).

2050

  • We operate climate-neutrally as a group of companies (Scope 1-3).

Carbon Footprint

Given the urgency of climate change and our legacy of preserving our planet for future generations, it is crystal clear: we must reduce our carbon footprint by becoming a carbon neutral company with a net-zero goal for our global operations in perspective. Currently, we are tracking our greenhouse gas emissions in the areas of Scopes 1 and 2 according to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. This means that we track all emissions which are released into the atmosphere as a direct result of a range of activities, as well as emissions released into the atmosphere through the consumption of purchased energy. Tracking of emissions that occur in EEW’s value chain (Scope 3) is in preparation. The latter is of great importance as more than 90% of our total greenhouse gas emissions are linked to the manufacturing of the steel we buy.

In addition to tracking our corporate carbon footprint, we have various Environmental Product Declarations (EDP) available that provide transparency on the environmental performance or impact of any product or material over its lifetime.

Tracking our carbon footprint and our climate and environmental actions is just a good start. We are constantly striving to improve our performance.

Environmental Management

EEW wants all companies within the group to work to the same standards in the area of environmental management. For this reason, all companies are certified according to ISO 14001.

As part of our environmental management, we focus on reducing waste and water consumption. That is why we have set corresponding key performance indicators at group level for all EEW entities. In this context, we take numerous initiatives for a cleaner and more environmentally friendly production process to ensure a minimization of negative impacts on the environment.

Convert flame cutting to hydrogen

Up to now, we have used acetylene as the fuel gas for flame cutting. This has a high CO2 content, which is why we are currently testing hydrogen as an alternative fuel gas.

At the Erndtebrueck site, we are already converting a firing tower to hydrogen. We will test the quantities of hydrogen we need to convert the entire production including cutting tables and what process-related advantages could result in addition to the environmentally relevant factors.

Inductive Preheating

Up to now we have used natural gas to preheat our longitudinally welded tubes. A more sustainable alternative is induction, which requires electricity as an energy source.

The test phase in our longitudinal seam production has already been successful, so we are now aiming to convert the infrastructure and thus switch our pre-annealing systems to induction and run them on electricity. We are also starting test runs for the electric pre-annealing of circumferential seams.

Recycling 

We attach great importance to the recycling of our waste and currently achieve a recycling rate of more than 80 %.

We continue to work on reducing the proportion of hazardous waste and continuously optimize our recycling rate.

Eco-Efficiency & Energy Management

As a counterpart to the ISO 14001 certification for environmental management, EEW implemented ISO 50001 for energy management. Onsite energy efficiency will continue to be a primary focus as we see it as an important component to not only optimize eco-efficiency, but also to improve the efficiency of our processes.

With this approach in mind, we have made great efforts to create the technical conditions for automatic tracking of energy consumption. Today, we are able to automatically retrieve energy consumption for all our production facilities around the globe online at the click of a mouse.

Solar in Korea

EEW Korea has installed solar panels and thus has taken an important step towards CO2 neutrality. The solar power plant on the roof of the Sacheon facility can generate up to 1.5 megawatts of electricity. This is equivalent to reducing 1,000 tons of CO2 per year, or an airplane circling the earth 140 times.

The solar project was implemented with a Korean energy management company, which took over the installation and management of the solar power plant, as well as the organization of feeding the green energy into the power grid.

Green power

The two German sites in Erndtebrueck and in Rostock are supplied with 100% green electricity.

EEW SPC has already been supplied with C02-neutral electricity since 2021, and we have achieved this goal at our headquarters since April 2022. 

Greener Transportation

Thanks to our own rail access, we can also deliver our products directly to our customers by rail. Alternatively, we also offer environmentally friendly intermodal transport, which ensures effective and economical transport of goods through the advantageous combination of the transport modes of truck and train. Our pipes are loaded into a loading unit, which is then only loaded as such from the truck onto the train and back again.

The flexibility of a truck is combined with the low energy consumption of a train, which means that transport is often faster and more environmentally friendly.

Energy-saving Lighting Technology

The hall lighting in the production halls in Erndtebrück has been converted to energy-saving lighting technology. This significantly improves the lighting of the workplaces and at the same time considerably reduces energy consumption.

An additional advantage is that less waste is generated in comparison to old light sources and the CO2 burden has been clearly reduced.
